Practice Oriented Book Group
A Zoom Offering
Prerequisite: Ongoing Students
Our fall selection for the Mindfulness Book Group is Ordinary Wonder by Charlotte Joko Beck. This collection of never-before published essays was compiled and edited by her daughter, Brenda Beck Hess. The essays focus on our “core beliefs,” the hidden, negative convictions we hold about ourselves that prevent us from experiencing life as it is and connecting with joy. With her wry humor and direct language, Joko Beck shows us how to move from thinking to experiencing, from compulsivity to confidence, from anguish to peace.
Registration is now closed for this series. There are no drop-ins; you must be registered to attend. The series began on 9/21, and meets on Zoom every other week for 6 sessions on 10/5, 10/19, 11/2, 11/16, 11/30.

A 13-week Class Series (9/8-12/1)
With Matthew Daniell
Prerequisite: Ongoing Students
Registration is now closed for this class which began on 9/8. There are no drop-in classes.
In this 13-week practice group we will explore in detail the Buddhas Kalama sutta on ‘free inquiry’. This seminal Sutta (teaching from the early teachings by the Buddha) captures the spirit of knowing experience for oneself, and not relying on any external authority, as well as using the ‘the wise’ as a standard for action. The sutta moves in detail through free inquiry, the forces that block clarity of the mind and heart and practices of love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Overall, this teaching provides a balanced and full approach to the unique path of clarity and openhearted living of the Buddha.
Ongoing Covid precautions: At this point we are not requiring masks at the Center as proof of full vaccination is required for participants and staff (if you would like to wear a mask, you are welcome to). As an added precaution, if you have cold or flu like symptoms, we ask that you do not attend any offering until you have had a negative quick covid test. The class will include sitting instructions and shared silent practice, as well as instruction and practice of walking and other forms of mindfulness practice designed for application in daily life. Although this series is designed for beginners, all are welcome and students may choose to repeat this series as new material will be introduced each time.

Cultivating and Experiencing Joy
A Full Day Retreat, with Half Day Option

The Buddha spoke of worldly joy and unworldly joy. We will explore unworldly joy such as the joy of being present, the joy of wholesome mental states, and the joy of being in Sangha. Experiencing for ourselves the role joy plays in the unfolding of the Noble Eightfold Path. We will explore the various places in the practice that joy arises so that we can become more mindful of it, and therefore strengthen this lovely mind state. The sitting and walking meditations on this retreat will be a bit more guided and structured to support the understanding and experiencing of joy.
